Trio lets you attach files in several places - a piece, a student, a lesson note, a practice assignment, an event, or a message. Each place has its own rule for when a family can see the file and where the file lands in the parent portal. This guide maps them all so you share on purpose and keep private files private.
Families reach shared files two ways:
One important exception: a composition's library files show only on the piece page, never in Materials. Materials aggregates the unified attachments set; composition-library files are a separate store, so they are not collected there.
| Where you add the file | When the family can see it | Where the family finds it |
|---|---|---|
| Composition Files (library) | Visible to members is on, and the piece is assigned to their student | Piece page under Resources > Repertoire. Not in Materials |
| Student Repertoire tab row | Always | Piece page, and Materials in the Your pieces group |
| Student profile Files shelf | Only files set to Shared (files default to Internal) | Materials, in the Student files group |
| Lesson note attachment | Only after the note is completed and shared | The note under Resources > Lesson Notes, and Materials in the From your lessons group |
| Practice assignment attachment | Always, to that student's family | The member practice page, and Materials in the Practice assignments group |
| Practice item attachment | Always, to that student's family | Today's focus on the member practice page, and Materials in the Practice items group |
| Event attachment | Only when the event is published | The event page, and Materials in the Events group |
| Message attachment | The thread's participants | The conversation thread, and Materials in the Shared in messages group |
Only two of these surfaces give you a per-file switch; the rest derive visibility from the surface itself:
Every other surface shares automatically once its own condition is met: a Repertoire tab file and a practice file are always visible to that student's family, a lesson note file appears once you complete and share the note, an event file appears once the event is published, and a message file is visible to the people in that thread.
For a file only you should see, use a composition Files entry with Visible to members turned off, or the student Files shelf left Internal. Do not use a Repertoire-tab row file or a practice attachment for anything private - those have no switch and always reach the family.
