Music Teacher's Helper Alternative: Duet Partner vs Trio (2026)

Written by the Trio team · Updated · Published

Music Teacher's Helper, founded in 2004, was sold in May 2021 and renamed Duet Partner. The company rebuilt the product in 2023 and kept the old one running as "Legacy Duet," so there are two Duets. This page compares Trio with the one a new customer buys, for teachers choosing between them or looking for a Music Teacher's Helper alternative.

The Trio team wrote this comparison, so read it as one vendor's account of another, not a neutral review. Every claim about Duet traces to Duet's own published pages, cited at the bottom. Independent reviews of the new Duet are scarce (one on Capterra). For the view from a working studio, see Anna Morehart Falk, a violin teacher who runs 25 students on Trio.

Quick verdict

Choose Trio if:

  • You have, or might add, a second teacher; Duet is single-teacher only
  • You want two-way texting plus a no-password portal for notes, practice, and repertoire
  • You want AI lesson notes and an assistant that answers questions about your studio
  • You would rather your families not pay a 1% fee on every payment
  • You run 10 students or fewer and would rather pay nothing

Choose Duet if:

  • You teach alone and always will, and your families would rather never log into anything
  • You want the whole season's schedule built for you from family preference forms
  • You would otherwise need Trio Max, and $9 flat beats $20
  • You value a 20-year brand with live office hours three days a week

Both lists are real. The first one covers most studios that expect to grow.

Pricing

Solo teacher$5/mo (Pro)$9/mo flat
Annual$50/yr Pro, $200/yr Max (save 17%)About $100/yr ($99 on the pricing page, $109 in the FAQ)
Additional teachers$5/mo per seatNot supported
Fee on family paymentsNone from Trio1% on every digital payment, paid by the family
Legacy Duet (old MTH platform)N/A$14–$49/mo by student count, 14-day trial

The subscription gap is small: Duet's $9 against $5 for Trio Pro, or about $100 against $50 a year. The 1% is the number that matters. Duet adds it to every statement a family pays, on top of Stripe's card fee, and by Duet's own FAQ the family "cannot pay your charge without paying the transaction fee." On a 25-student studio billing $4,000 a month, that is about $480 a year taken from families for the software the teacher chose. Trio adds nothing on top of Stripe's rate.

Duet is free for enrolled university students and half price for a documented first year of teaching, a genuinely good offer for that audience.

Where Duet still wins

  • The Smart Scheduler. Families answer an availability form; Duet matches it against the teacher's hours and produces the semester schedule in one pass. For a 40-student studio re-slotting every August, that is real hours back.
  • No logins, ever. Statements, reminders, lesson notes, and booking links all arrive by text, with email as a fallback. Families who hate apps will like this.
  • Cheaper than Trio Max. $9 flat beats $20 for a large solo studio that needs Max-tier features.
  • Twenty years and a live community. Founded 2004, customers in 27 countries, open office hours Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, a Facebook group, and a podcast.
  • Discounts that matter to new teachers. Free while you are a university student; 50% off your first year of teaching.

If you teach alone, plan to stay that way, and your families prefer texts to portals, Duet is a sound choice.

Where Trio wins

Room for a second teacher. Duet's own FAQ: "Currently, Duet is only set up to have single teacher access." Trio adds seats at $5 a month, and the studio-wide calendar, rosters, and billing already handle them. Owners see every teacher's lesson notes, and a substitute can edit the note for a lesson they teach.

Texting, plus a portal without the password. Duet dropped the parent portal when it rebuilt; families get texts. Trio texts too: family replies land in the studio's message thread, and reminders go by text, email, or push, as each family prefers. Parents who want more sign in with a one-time code or passkey, no password, and find notes, practice history, repertoire, invoices, and messages in one place.

AI that Duet does not have. Nothing on Duet's site, help center, or blog mentions AI through November 2025. Trio turns a few typed or dictated lines into a parent-ready lesson note, and Ask Trio answers "who owes money" or "who missed last week" on demand. Owners can also give outside AI assistants such as Claude read-only access to studio data (MCP).

The family's bill is the teacher's bill. Duet's 1% lands on every statement a parent pays. Trio adds nothing on top of Stripe's rate, and automated billing sends each family one invoice on the 1st, with email reminders before and after the due date.

Free for small studios. Duet's only free path is university enrollment. Trio Free is $0 forever for up to 10 students, no card required.

One product, built in 2026. Duet is two products under one brand: a 2004 platform with the full feature set and a 2023 rebuild with a thinner one, on separate logins. A switching teacher has to pick which Duet to buy. Trio has the practice log, repertoire, lending library, and studio page in one product.

Signs of life. Duet's last blog post is from November 2025, its last announced feature from August 2025, and its pricing page footer still says 2024. Trio ships weekly.

Try it before you decide

Trio's free tier is the real product for up to 10 students, no card, no clock (online payments start at Pro, $5/mo). Put your real schedule in, invite a few families, and run one billing cycle. If your studio is one teacher and your families would rather text than log in, Duet's 30-day trial is worth running the same month.

FAQ

Is Duet Partner the same as Music Teacher's Helper?

Yes. Music Teacher's Helper (founded 2004) was sold in May 2021 and renamed Duet Partner; musicteachershelper.com now redirects to duetpartner.com. A rebuilt app launched in August 2023, and the original MTH platform still runs as "Legacy Duet" with its old student-count tiers. This page compares the current Duet product.

How much does Duet cost compared to Trio?

Duet is a flat $9/mo for one teacher (about $100/yr; its pricing page says $99 and its FAQ says $109), plus a 1% fee added to every digital payment a family makes. There is no free plan. Trio is free for up to 10 students, $5/mo for Pro, and $20/mo for Max, and adds nothing on top of Stripe's rate.

Can Duet handle more than one teacher?

No. Duet's FAQ says it "is only set up to have single teacher access." Trio adds teacher seats at $5/mo each.

Does Duet have a parent portal?

No. Duet communicates by text message with email as a backup; statements, reminders, and self-scheduling links arrive by text, and families never log in. Trio texts too (family replies land in the message thread) and adds a portal with no password, where parents see lesson notes, practice, repertoire, invoices, and messages.

Who pays Duet's 1% fee?

The family. Duet adds 1% to every statement paid by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or ACH, on top of Stripe's card processing fee, and the family cannot pay without it. Trio adds nothing on top of Stripe's rate.

What is Duet's Smart Scheduler, and does Trio have one?

Duet collects each family's availability by form and generates the season's schedule against the teacher's hours. Trio does not build a whole season automatically. Families book, cancel, and reschedule their own lessons in the portal.

Does Duet have a mobile app or AI features?

Neither. Duet is web-based with no separate app, and no AI feature appears on its site, help center, or blog through November 2025. Trio is an installable web app with push notifications, AI lesson notes, and the Ask Trio assistant.
